Matija Sarkic, goalkeeper of the Montenegrin senior national team, has died at the age of 26 of unknown causes. Milwall, the English second division club where he played, announced it on Saturday.
“We all express our affection and support Matija’s family and friends at this extremely sad time”, said the team from the suburbs of London in a statement, “The club is making no further comments for now and asks that life be respected private to Matija’s family”.

According to the Montenegrin press, Sarkic felt ill in his apartment in Budva, Montenegro. After the footballer’s friends informed them, emergency services went to his apartment and found him dead. Born in England, Sarkic spent much of his adolescence in Belgium, where he trained at Anderlecht’s youth team. Since 2018 he has played for several English teams, such as Milwall, who signed him last summer. He had played nine matches with the senior Montenegro national team, the last of which was against Belgium on 5 June.
