If there are no bureaucratic hitches, between the end of this month and the beginning of October, the demolition work of the former Granai Silos will restart, hopefully definitively, the last “outpost” of a quadrilateral which originally included other “former buildings” which have become non-places – Fish Market, General Warehouses, Dockmaster’s House – and which, in the near future, will have to host a public park in the form of a panoramic terrace overlooking the sea.
Last April everything stopped, as it had happened the year before, due to birds nesting on the roofs and eaves of the imposing building. The pressure of environmentalist associations on the one hand and, above all, the severity of the laws on these issues – from the Habitats Directive to other stringent European and national regulations – have forced the Municipality to stop the bulldozers for the entire period of reproduction of kestrels and house martins, the two species sighted in the area.
This time Palazzo Zanca does not want to make the mistakes of last autumn again, since the branch councilor Francesco Caminiti has chaired several meetings on the subject since he took office, with the clear aim of starting again with demolitions as soon as possible. And that sooner rather than later is now approaching. There are two technical steps that must be completed before giving the go-ahead to the bulldozers.
