Messina, even the Order of Architects says no to the “Zanklon” operation

The Order of Architects has decided to intervene in what its president, Giovanni Lazzari, defines as the «very delicate “Zanklon” operation», i.e. the project of new real estate investments financed with Pnrr funds intended for the construction of off-site student residences. «Given that any initiative involving private finance, alongside public finance, is always desirable – thus begins the document drawn up by the Council of the Order -, in the current circumstance, however, there is more than a fear that, as has happened in the past in our territory, the interests of a few will end up prevailing over those of the community. Without going into the merits of the architectural project and the lack of provision of beds for non-resident university students, in relation to which we hope for prompt and effective planning, which takes into account the possibility of creating not only dormitory buildings, but actual neighborhoods to be dedicated to the purpose, equipped with all comforts and services, in the same way as what occurs in the most important Italian and European cities, where it would also be necessary to govern the costs of access for university students, also controlling them compared to those of the current market, we wish here to express concern for the technical-urban planning and environmental aspects that the interventions under discussion may materialize in the territory”.
