Messina, four families in the hovel of the Taormina district: the appeal of the undersecretary Matilde Siracusano

As proof of the conditions faced by various strata of the Messina population, a sit-in will be held in the afternoon by four families who have been living in the Taormina district shantytown for over five years, who will meet in front of the Municipality headquarters. «They are – explains the parliamentarian Matilde Siracusano – four families with children, with fragile people. Four families who have been living in desperation for years, with open sewers, with walls blackened by mold, with rats just outside their makeshift houses. Sara Tripodo, Valentina Paratore, Veronica Paratore, Maria Gervasio, Santina Barbera and Girolamo Triolo ask for dignity, they ask for a future for their children.

I make an appeal to the mayor of Messina, Federico Basile, and to the sub-commissioner for sanitation, Santi Trovato. Let’s help them, because they really need to get out of this nightmare. A nightmare that no family deserves, that no child deserves, an unacceptable condition in a civilized country. The resources are there, the tools are there to intervene promptly, the sub-commissioner can ask – as already done in the past – for an exemption to make the assignment process possible. Housing must be found immediately for these people.”
