Life that is reborn where the fire had left only ash and desolation. Two and a half years after the devastating fire of 25 July 2023 which hit the masses hard, the territory is turning green again thanks to a reforestation project with a strong symbolic and community value. In the land adjacent to the Massa San Giovanni sports field, 63 trees have been planted, including eucalyptus, olive trees, citrus fruits, cherry trees and medlar trees. A non-random number: each tree was entrusted with a child of the Masses, a symbol of life and rebirth. In fact, sixty-three children were born in the area since 2013, called today to safeguard and raise a fragment of the future. The initiative was made possible thanks to the contribution of some villagers and above all to the fundraising promoted by the diocesan Caritas in 2024 as part of the “Lent of Charity” project, inspired by Pope Francis’ message “Through the desert God guides us to freedom”.

A path of solidarity

A solidarity process that involved the parishes of the city and provincial territory, in collaboration with the Departmental Inspectorate of Forests of Messina. The planting turned into a real community celebration, the result of the shared commitment of the parish led by Don Giuseppe Giunti and the cultural association “LaCounty Massa San Giovanni”, who promoted and accompanied the project from its initial stages; Deacon Giovanni Maimone, deputy director of the diocesan Caritas, was present. “Whoever plants a tree, plants a hope” is the motto chosen by Don Giunti, who during the ceremony underlined the profound value of the initiative: “After two and a half years we are ringing the bells again, this time not to raise an alarm, but as a sign of celebration”. A simple but meaningful gesture, which restores dignity to a wounded territory and reaffirms the bond between man, nature and community. Where fire once destroyed, today roots of hope grow entrusted to the new generations.
