Schlein meets Yossi Beilin and Samieh Al Abed at the Nazarene

The secretary of the Democratic Party Elly Schlein, together with the foreign affairs manager of the PD Peppe Provenzano, the group leader Chiara Braga and Piero Fassino, met Yossi Beilin, former Israeli minister, and Samieh Al Abed, former ANP minister, both negotiators for the Oslo Accords and previously heard by the same Foreign Affairs Commission in the Chamber, on the geopolitical situation in the Middle East. During the meeting, Schlein reiterated the Democratic Party’s support for the ‘two peoples, two states, single horizon capable of guaranteeing security and rights for both the Israeli and Palestinian people’ solution. He also underlined the importance of transforming the truce into true peace, taking all the necessary steps, starting from ensuring the Palestinians’ right to self-determination and full recognition of the State of Palestine. Particular attention was paid to the situation in the Gaza Strip, with the need to guarantee the influx and distribution of humanitarian aid, which today is still insufficient compared to the needs of the civilian population. The need to put an end to illegal occupations in the West Bank and the growing concern over the actions of violent settlers, which represent a serious factor of destabilization and a violation of fundamental rights, were also recalled. Finally, Schlein confirmed the Democratic Party’s commitment to supporting every political and diplomatic effort aimed at de-escalation and the protection of the civilian population, in the belief that only a negotiated process can pave the way to a just and lasting peace. “Without the possibility of any impunity for the crimes committed in recent years”, it is underlined in a note.
