“The reason for the discussions was the lack of contract.” Mohammad Taj Alamyar, a 35-year-old Afghan, the only survivor of the Amendolara massacre, told investigators what happened last Monday morning when he was in the minivan with the four boys burned alive. The victims are three Afghans and a Pakistani: Pakistani Waseem Khan, 29 years old, and Pashtun Afghans Amin Fazal Khogjani (28), Ullah Ismat Qiemi (19) and Safi Iayjad (27). For their barbaric killing, the two Pakistanis Safeer Ahmed and Ali Raza, both 31 years old, ended up in prison, accused of multiple and multiple murders aggravated by trivial reasons.

The threats in the minivan and the request for the contract

Mohammad recounts the moments in which they were locked in the infernal trap: «Me and these guys with whom we worked together were taken by Ali, the driver of the vehicle we were traveling in. Ali had smoked hashish. The boy on the passenger side took a knife and put it to the throat of one of the boys who was traveling with us. I was sitting in the back. The driver was dressed in black and is the leader. The person sitting on the passenger side was dressed in white. We workers asked the person dressed in white who was supposed to give us a work contract for us who arrived from Sardinia. The boss called the police around 5. In my opinion he called the police because the other man had pulled out the knife. The latter had a slightly swollen face. One of the boys who died punched the person who pulled out the knife.”

The trap at the gas station and the conditions of slavery

«The argument – the story continues – happened early in the morning. The reason for these discussions was the lack of contract. I was sitting in the trunk. To recap we went to work, then came back and on the way back we stopped at the petrol station. The chief turned off the car, closed all the windows and got out. The petrol spread all over the ground. We hadn’t argued again. Then he also doused the trunk with petrol. Before we stopped the car, one of the car’s occupants threw a bottle out of the window. Then the boss maneuvered into the service station. Then he was joined by a man in uniform. The boss doused the luggage with petrol, then set fire to the car with a lighter. I was in the trunk. I didn’t understand anything anymore, I jumped from the trunk. I ran out of petrol while I was on fire and an Albanian boy who stopped helped me. Another boy, an Arab, who was passing by stopped. Until then I didn’t know either the Arab boy or the Albanian one. Then I went home to Villapiana for treatment. And then when the police came they took me to the hospital for treatment. We were in a state of slavery to the boss. In a house with just one room we slept 10 people.”

The horror of the fire and the locking of the doors

Then, the survivor returned to reconstruct the moments of the fire: «Alì started the fire and then ran away, while the other didn’t, because he kept the door closed so as not to let out my friends who were sitting in the back seat. The two prepared a fifth plan between them. When the car was set on fire, both Ali and the other man locked the doors. I saw that Ali and the other were pushing the doors. I was saved because I jumped from the trunk. Ali and the other had already escaped. Ali and the other wanted to kill us because we asked for money or a work contract.”
