The landings of migrants do not stop even on the last day of the year. At first light today the Crotone Coast Guard rescued 59 people who were traveling on a sailing vessel off the coast of Calabria. The naval unit of the Port Authority intercepted the vessel with the migrants on board about 20 miles from Isola Capo Rizzuto. The migrants, including 10 women and 15 minors, were transferred aboard the patrol boat and then taken safely to the port of Crotone. Among the migrants rescued, 47 are from Iran, 10 are Iraqis and two are Afghans.
From the first reconstructions carried out by the police forces, the migrants would have left about 5 days ago from the coasts of Turkey. The disembarkation operations were coordinated by the prefecture of Crotone and carried out by the staff of the police headquarters’ immigration office. The Italian Red Cross provided assistance to the landed migrants who were taken to the reception center on Isola Capo Rizzuto. The health control activities were carried out by the team of the Vulnerability Office of the ASP of Crotone, set up specifically for emergencies such as landings, which verified the good health conditions.
