The Regional Observatory on new poverty in Calabria raises a cry of alarm on the basis of data that highlights the exponential growth of poverty, both in absolute and relative terms. The numbers paint a dramatic and unacceptable picture: Calabria confirms itself as the region with the highest risk of hardship and poverty in Italy. «In 2024 – reasons Antonio Belmonte, director of the Observatory -, as many as 48.8% of the Calabrian population is at risk of poverty or social exclusion. This means that almost one in two Calabrians lives in conditions of serious economic or social fragility. This region records one of the highest rates of relative poverty in Italy. In 2024, as many as 23.5% of Calabrian families live with a monthly expense lower than the minimum threshold (national average 10.9%). This translates into over 175,000 families in Calabria, involving more than 400,000 people, forced to live with less than the bare minimum.”
