Five years and 4 months of imprisonment: this is the sentence inflicted in an abbreviated trial by the Cosenza magistrate, Letizia Benigno, on Rosa Vespa, the 53-year-old who on 21 January last year kidnapped a newborn baby in the “Sacro Cuore” clinic in the center of the Bruzio capital. The accused, defended by the lawyers Gianluca Garritano and Teresa Gallucci, had been judged by the consultants appointed by the preliminary hearing judge to be “capable of understanding and will” at the time of the crime.
Prosecutor Antonio Tridico had requested an 8-year sentence for Vespa. The little girl’s family members joined the civil action assisted by the lawyers Paolo Pisani, Chiara Penna, Natasha Gardi and Giorgio Loccisano.
“We have finally closed this chapter, now we want to move forward – comments Valeria Chiappetta, little Sofia’s mother – and – we thank the lawyers who were impeccable thanks to those who were close to us”.
“We are satisfied, because the full capacity of understanding and will has been recognized – declares the lawyer Chiara Penna who defends the Cavoto family – on the path of restorative justice a sign of repentance is necessary and in this matter no one has ever apologized, which is also why we opposed it”.
“For us the sentence is appropriate – say Rosa Vespa’s lawyers – we will however evaluate what to do”.
