On the afternoon of March 12, 2024, An elderly retired from Nicoterawent to the carabinieri station for denounce a serious episode of scam which had just been a victim. Two strangers, a man and a woman, They had introduced themselves to his door by telling her that the daughter was at a barracks of the carabinieri for judicial problems and that urgently served a sum in cash equal to 14,000 euros. In shock for the news and fearing for the fate of the daughter, the woman delivered the sum requested. The two walked away immediately afterwards making their tracks lose.
The first testimonies collected on the spot have made it possible to acquire some useful elements. A resident had partially noticed the plaque of the car with which the scammers had moved away. Thanks to the analysis of the images of the video surveillance systems in the area, the carabinieri managed to trace the entire plaque resulting from a rental vehicle.
From there, a patient and meticulous investigation took shape: the carabinieri requested the rental company with the identity of the subject who had taken care of the car and, above all, the GPS data that traced the movements on the day and time of the scam. By crossing this information with the analysis of the telephone records, the military managed to give a name and a face to the two scammers: A man and a woman, both of Campania origin.
The investigative activity ended this week with the transmission of the documents to the Public Prosecutor of Vibo Valentia, led by Camillo Falvo who, together with the delegated magistrate, asked and obtained by the judge for preliminary investigations for the issue of the measure of theobligation to stay against one of the two suspects. The notification of the provision was carried out by the Carabinieri Territorial Department of Mondragone.
“Episodes like this – said the prosecutor Falvo – show how important it is to report immediately and precisely, because every detail can prove to be decisive. We must not be afraid or shame: such scams affect precisely because those who put in place know how to manipulate the emotions of the weakest and more defenseless people ».
Colonel Luca Toti stressed: «The weapon of Vibo has long been engaged in a widespread prevention campaign against the scams to the elderly. We organize information meetings throughout the territory precisely to provide citizens with practical tools to recognize the dangers and defend themselves ».
The result achieved is the result of the professionalism and of the teaching commitment of the Carabinieri of the Nicotera station who have been able to combine investigative rigor and operational sensitivity. The careful listening of citizens, conducted with emotional intelligence, has made it possible to grasp every detail, fragment of memory and perception. The determination in following each track then made it possible to give a face and a name to the managers.
Once again, it was the trust between citizens and law enforcement that makes the difference, demonstrating how strong, in the territory, the link between the weapon and the people who protects is strong.
