Public notice published in advance information “Conserve, restore and protect the habitats and species of the RN2000” which provides for the financing of interventions for the implementation of priority conservation measures of habitats and species to be implemented in areas of particular naturalistic value.

The resources amount to 2.3 million euros of the 2021-2027 regional programming.

“A concrete way – underlined the regional councilor for the Environment Giovanni Calabrese – to place natural capital at the center of regional policies, recognizing the strategic value of the ecosystem services deriving from protected areas and the Natura 2000 network system. Calabria holds an immense natural heritage: three large national parks (Pollino, Sila Aspromonte), the Area protected marina of Capo Rizzuto, two regional natural parks (Serre park and Coriglianeto park), six regional marine parks and seven nature reserves. In addition to these protected areas, there are 178 special conservation areas (SZC) and six special protection areas for avifauna (SPA) which constitute an integral part of that great European green infrastructure which is represented by the Natura 2000 Network. Calabria also hosts 74 habitats out of the 230 protected at European level by Directive 92/43/91. Faced with such significant natural capital – added Calabrese – the regional Administration has placed environmental protection among its strategic objectives, through concrete programmatic paths aimed, on the one hand, at strengthening the knowledge framework and, on the other other, to the activation of direct environmental protection and/or restoration actions”.

Taking advantage of the positive experience gained over the last few years, the call provides for the direct involvement of environmental associations in order to strengthen a synergistic relationship with entities present in the area and who have always been committed to safeguarding our natural capital.

The call includes interventions aimed at the restoration and/or protection of both terrestrial and marine-coastal environments. Specifically: protection of habitats referred to in the European “Habitats and Birds” directives, support for recovery centers for wild animals in difficulty; restoration and/or maintenance of wetlands to support herpertofauna; extraordinary actions to remove waste present in the Natura 2000 Network sites; control and/or eradication actions of invasive species of Union interest; protection and restoration of freshwater ecosystems and riparian environments.
