Orange alert in part of Calabria: schools closed in Reggio, Vibo and Cosentino

Due to the forecast bad weather and the orange alert issued for today on the Tyrrhenian side of Calabria, several municipalities have issued orders suspending educational activities. There are numerous mayors who have already announced the closure of schools in the Cosentino, Catanzaro and Reggino areas. According to what was released by the Civil Protection, the areas most at risk are the mountain ones due to gusts of wind. But storm surges are also feared starting this evening.

Due to bad weather and considering the ordinance issued by the Municipality of Rende, the University of Calabria has communicated that all graduation sessions scheduled for today, 12 February 2026, are postponed to 16 February.

Schools closed

The acting mayor of Reggio Calabria Domenico Donato Battaglia has ordered the closure of schools of all levels, like the mayors of the municipalities of Paola, Guardia Piemontese, Rende, Praia, Bisignano, Aiello, Amantea and San Nicola Arcella in the province of Cosenza.

The city of Vibo Valentia also locks itself down to ensure public safety with the closure of all schools of all levelsboth state and private. The measure includes nursery schools and nursery schools, both public and private. In addition to schools, in Vibo, they will remain closed for the entire day municipal cemeteries hey fenced public parksincluding:

  • Municipal Villa
  • Villa Gagliardi
  • Urban Park
  • Remembrance Park

The ordinance also prohibits access to unfenced parks and prohibits pedestrian transit and parking in tree-lined areas. Particular caution is required in historic center and near public lighting poles.

Appeal to citizenship

Until the emergency ceases, citizens are obliged to secure all objects displayed outside (such as vases, curtains, antennas and dehors) that could be moved or damaged by the expected strong gusts of wind.
