“Deep concern” and “strong dissent” in Patti were expressed by the “spontaneous citizen committee for the protection of greenery” in reference to the consolidation works of the town of via Aldo Moro, in the San Giovanni area, which involve the felling of thirty maritime pines.
According to the members of the committee, the consequences would be devastating, also in terms of the hydrogeological safety of the area. «Tall trees – we read in a note released by the association – perform a function of stabilizing the soil through the root system, while the foliage and roots absorb and slow down rainwater».
The Committee fears consequences, especially in cases of storms, which are now increasingly constant: “The removal of trees – it observes – would reduce the cohesion of the ground, favoring surface sliding, especially in the event of intense rain”. Hence the inevitable overloading of the downstream drainage networks, already enormously stressed. Based on agronomic and forestry estimates, the thirty pine trees on Via Aldo Moro absorb hundreds of liters of water daily, also producing up to 300 thousand liters of oxygen per day: a quantity capable of covering the daily needs of a thousand people.
In short, the culling of the thirty specimens could determine a particularly significant impact on the healthiness of the air, producing economic-environmental damage for the entire community.
