A meeting in the mayor’s cabinet recently concluded Giovanni Papasso to take stock of the situation regarding the restoration of the drinking water of the Sibari Lakes. In addition to the mayor, the head of the Technical Area, an engineer, was present Luigi Serra Cassano, the maintenance team manager, Peppino Perri, And Giuseppe D’Ambrogio, manager of the Teodoro D’Ambrogio company, specialized in drinking water purification and which manages the plant of the Sibarita nautical complex.
“We are constantly keeping under control – explained Mayor Papasso – the water pipes that bring water to the various lake complexes, just as we are also using in this regard the reports that we receive regarding the fact that sometimes the water comes out dirty and/or smelly. Reports that have always arrived in large numbers even in recent years but which we are using to arrive at a definitive resolution of the problem and which is not to chlorinate any existing pipeline with large quantities to hide the dust under the carpet. I remember, in fact, that not for a month, but since 2021, the water has not been drinkable and if the situation arose three years ago and has never been resolved, it is because we did not work properly first. Problems that we inherited and are now solving.”
In fact, from the meeting it emerged that this situation is due to the fact that both the public and private pipes, even though they are new, have remained dirty by virtue of the fact that the water purification plant, acquired by the Sybarite Municipality after the ruling of the administrative court on 4 September 2024, is stopped or not functioning as it should, indeed, for many, too many years.
This is why a series of radical interventions must be carried out to renovate a large part of the water purification plant of the Sibarite nautical complex.
Those present also reiterated how, in addition to the duct washing carried out in recent months, it is necessary to carry out others both on public ducts and also on private ones and those inside the complexes. “As far as the Municipality is concerned – continued Mayor Papasso – aWe have arranged for the chemical washing of the municipal pipeline. In addition to this intervention, other purge points have been identified that have not yet been explored and further cleaning will be carried out in these too.” As regards private individuals, however, the competent offices will issue a specific ordinance to ensure that condominiums and complexes ensure the washing of the duct under their responsibility.
“In the meantime – concluded the mayor – I reassure the users of the Lakes that qualified management of the plant that we have entrusted to the D’Ambrogio company will continue. At the same time, our technician in charge defined the renovation project of the water purification plant which involves a cost of 400 thousand euros. We have already prepared the request to take out a mortgage but we are trying to avoid having to resort to it. Which is why I met both the regional councilor this week Gianluca Gallo that the manager of the Environment department of the Calabria Region John Joel to try to include the expense in the engineering project of municipal water networks or prepare a specific project from which to obtain financing. We are awaiting a determination and will update Lake users and citizens as soon as possible. In any case, attention remains high and we will arrive at a solution.”
