The Municipality of Catanzaro has been awarded a regional loan of 200,000 euros for the implementation of a reclamation, restoration and environmental redevelopment intervention of a stretch of the banks of the Corace river, near the mouth, including the neighboring state-owned areas.

The area concerned has long been the subject of illicit abandonment of waste, including special waste, as well as illegal accumulation of vessels, with serious repercussions on the environment, landscape and safety. The intervention will allow the removal of large quantities of waste, the reclamation of degraded sites and the ecological recovery of an area of very high naturalistic value, strategic for the connection between the river and marine ecosystems.

For decades the area has been marked by neglect, degradation and illegal practices, as demonstrated by the widespread presence of burned waste. The project aims to return the area to the community, definitively removing it from improper uses that have compromised its environmental value over time.

Prevention

In addition to the material reclamation and restoration interventions, the project includes structural prevention actions, including the installation of three camera traps for video surveillance, aimed at ensuring constant control of the area and effectively combating the recurrence of new illegal abandonments.

The institutional coordination is particularly significant: the Municipality of Borgia also obtained funding from the same regional tender for similar interventions on the stretch of the river falling within its territory, thus ensuring coherent and continuous action along the river axis concerned.

The details

From an operational point of view, the intervention can be started once the required administrative procedures have been completed. The regional financing provides for the disbursement of an initial installment equal to 80% of the total amount, according to the timescales established by the Calabria Region.

«This is a result of great importance – declares the Councilor for the Environment Irene Colosimo – which allows us to intervene in a concrete way on one of the most delicate environmental areas of the municipal territory. After years of degradation and abandonment, we are returning a fundamental portion of the Corace river to the citizens in conditions of greater safety, environmental quality and decorum. It is a significant step that marks a change of method and vision in the protection of our natural heritage.”
