The control and monitoring activity of the Metropolitan Police of Reggio Calabria continues with determinationdirected by Commander Francesco Macheda, in combating the phenomenon of poaching and protecting wildlife. This action, considered an unavailable asset of the State, has seen police personnel engaged in targeted operations in recent days which have led to the seizure of electromagnetic acoustic decoys used illegally to attract birds.
These devices, completely in violation of hunting regulations, are used by poachers to subtly attract certain species of birds, making them easy prey and facilitating their killing in very exposed conditions. The complaint against unknown persons for this offense has already been forwarded to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
The Metropolitan Police’s commitment to fighting poaching is further supported by hunting, environmental and voluntary associations, creating a fundamental synergy for the success of operations. Thanks also to the New Regulation on the matter, issued by the Metropolitan Council and in force from 2024, there has been a significant increase in requests and renewals for the qualification as Volunteer Hunting and Environmental Security Guards.
The wildlife protection actions are also carried out in collaboration with the Wild Animal Recovery Center (CRAS) of Catanzaro. In the last three years alone, the Metropolitan Police has carried out around 200 rescue and transport interventions of wildlife specimens, including hawks, foxes, hedgehogs, storks, seagulls, herons and mallards, all belonging to protected species. A constant commitment that underlines the importance of safeguarding biodiversity in the region.
