Romania’s Constitutional Court has annulled the presidential elections. The run-off between the pro-European candidate Elena Lasconi and the far-right Calin Georgescu came first in the first roundagainst the backdrop of possible Russian interference.

The cancellation of the first round of the presidential elections, held on November 24, occurred after the declassification of confidential security documents relating to alleged foreign interference, primarily by Russia, in the electoral campaign conducted on TikTok by Calin Georgescu, the independent candidate far-right surprise winner of the first round. Georgescu would have been favored by the platform which would have offered him advantageous conditions.

The decision came completely unexpected after the High Court itself in recent days, ruling on appeals and objections, had instead confirmed the result of the first round of the presidential elections, paving the way for the run-off which was scheduled for Sunday 8 December with the challenge between Georgescu and Elena Lasconi, leader of the moderate center-right USR party.
