The Australian Open final fades away for Jannik Sinner. The Italian world no.2 was beaten in the Melbourne semi-final in the fifth set by Novak Djokovic who will now face the world no.1 Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz. The Serbian champion beat the South Tyrolean with a score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 4-6, 4-6. Sinner scored more points than Djokovic, but they weren’t enough.

“I can’t find the words. It all seems surreal, the intensity and quality of the tennis was extremely high and I knew that only by playing like this I could win. Jannik is an incredible player and he pushed me to the limit.” These are the words of Novak Djokovic, in the on-court interview, after his success over Jannik Sinner in the second semi-final of the 2026 Australian Open. The Melbourne crowd was delirious, cheering for the Serbian, who has always been “fond” of the Australian Major.

Sinner: “I had opportunities and I missed them, credit to Djokovic”

«It’s a Slam that I care about a lot and it certainly hurts. I had many opportunities, especially in the fifth set.” After the semi-final lost to Djokovic at the Australian Open, Jannik Sinner clearly addressed the heart of the defeat after the match and at the same time recognized the value of his opponent and the lesson he received: «He has won 24 Slams and I am not surprised by his level. He was the greatest for many years, a role model for me and for Carlos. I had my opportunities and I missed them, a lot of credit should be given to him. I scored more points than him, but it’s irrelevant.”
