First the fight, then the stabbing. Today the arrest and arrest of a 28-year-old Algerian man for attempted murder after an attack that occurred last November 27th.
It was just after 5pm when the Carabinieri Operations Center received numerous calls from residents, alarmed by a violent conflict between non-EU citizens along Via Salerno in the seaside hamlet of Schiavonea.
Some passers-by would have noticed a man seriously injured and with abundant blood loss. Episodes of tension between groups of foreigners had also been reported in the previous days in the same area, the scene of several clashes in the streets of the neighborhood.
When the military arrived on site they found the victim still on the ground and in critical condition. The 118 operators, who intervened in support, provided initial treatment and stabilized the man before being transported to hospital. The doctors found that the wounds had been caused by a cutting weapon: deep blows, inflicted in the direction of vital points, such as to suggest a clear homicidal intent.
The Carabinieri started an immediate investigative activity at the site of the attack, collecting evidence, testimonies and every element useful for reconstructing the facts. The detailed work carried out in the following hours made it possible to outline a circumstantial framework considered unambiguous by the investigators, identifying the 28-year-old Algerian as responsible for the attack.
According to what emerged, the motive for the gesture would be linked – at present – to tensions and conflicts between groups of foreigners of different ethnic groups present in the area. In light of the information gathered, the Carabinieri proceeded with the arrest of a suspect in the crime against the young man, who was transferred to prison and made available to the magistrates of the Castrovillari Prosecutor’s Office.
