Waste separation is growing but Tari is also increasing again, especially in the South, especially in Sicily. This is what emerges from the latest report by CittadinanzAttiva, the “Urban waste” dossier published just two days ago.
In 2025, the average national expenditure for urban waste management is equal to 340 euros per year, an increase of 3.3% compared to 2024 (329 euros). Rates are growing – to varying degrees – in all regions, with the exception of Molise, Valle d’Aosta and Sardinia, and in 95 of the 110 provincial capitals.
In Sicily a family pays on average 402 euros, +3.1% compared to 2024 when they spent 390 euros.
Siena is less expensive with an average fare of 250 euros.
Separate waste collection is also growing everywhere, which in 2023 stood at 66.6% of the waste produced (it was 65.2% in 2022), in Sicily it stood at 55.2%. The territorial differences remain marked, with the North where the average expenditure stands at 290 euros per year and separate waste collection reaches 73% of the waste produced; follows the Center where families spend on average 364 euros, while yes
separates 62% of waste; always bringing up the rear is the South with an average expenditure of 385 euros per year and separate waste collection at 59%.
The cheapest regions are Trentino-Alto Adige (€224), Lombardy (€262) and Veneto (290
€), while the most expensive remain Puglia (€445), Campania (€418) and Sicily (€402).
In Messina the 2025 Tari stood at €331, €4.3 more than in 2024. The per capita production of waste fell (436.4 tonnes), while the latest waste separation data reported in the CittadinanzAttiva document is that of 2023, 55.4%, obviously already exceeded (the mayor’s latest declarations call for a figure which, to date, would already be 61%).
