THE’historical cultural association Libertaschaired by Dario Godanohas joined the national campaign to promote the reading of “May dand the Books” with the literary reviews Persephone (2022), Telemachus (2023) and Andromeda (2024). This latest edition was chosen as a finalist for the National Award “Il Maggio dei Libri 2024”, created to encourage and stimulate the habit of reading. The Award consists of recognizing the five best reading promotion projects carried out in each of the following categories: Libraries; Cultural associations; Schools; Prisons, healthcare and elderly care facilities; Bookshops.

The Center for Books and Reading is an autonomous institute of the Ministry of Culture which belongs to the General Directorate of Libraries and Copyright. The main task of the Centre, consistently with the political priorities of the MIC, is to promote policies for the dissemination of books, culture and Italian authors and to carry out initiatives and information campaigns to raise awareness and encourage young people to read. Since 2011, the Center has organized “Il Maggio dei Libri” throughout Italy every year, involving local authorities, libraries, bookshops, cultural associations, schools and publishers.

Among 15,313 activities, divided into 4,982 initiatives held between 23 April and 31 May in which 393 associations throughout Italy operated in the edition of “Il Maggio dei Libri 2024”, only 5 associations reached the final which took place on Saturday 9 November: the Ev. Cultural Association. San Severino Marche (MC); the Link Aps Association of Altamura (BA), the Libertas Association of Tropea (VV); the Women’s Coordination Group of Arpigliano (PZ) and the Readers’ Club – Presidio del Libro of Bisceglie (BAT), the latter was the winner of a prize of €2,000 in vouchers to spend on the purchase of books at the bookshop winner of the competition.

Immense joy and satisfaction on the part of the artistic director of “Andromeda” Dario Godano for having been part of the five finalist associations, a recognition that gratifies and honors the work done to best promote culture in Tropea, but which at the same time invites us to better with greater criteria and method to increase the quality of the event, primarily involving schools, synergistic associations and local authorities. The enriching element of the “Andromeda” Literary Review was to make the architectural heritage of the historic center of Tropea accessible in six weekends dedicated to the presentations of regional and national authors, as well as the literary walk with high school students and the guided tour of the gardens secrets set in the noble palaces and convents of the ancient city.

The event benefited from the free patronage of the Regional Council of Calabria and the Municipality of Tropea, as well as the Institute of Higher Education of Tropea which hosted the initiative, the collaboration of the Congrega dei Bianchi di San Nicola and the association cultural “Glicine”. The artistic direction would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the sponsors for their important support, to the Asalt and OspitiAmo Tropea associations for their support and a particular message of gratitude to the Parish Priest of the Co-Cathedral Church of Tropea Don Antonio Mazzeo
