The city of Crotone took part in the official lighting ceremony of the Olympic torch which took place in Olympia, Greece, the sacred place where the ancient Games were born and from which the symbolic path towards the modern Olympics still begins today.
Representing the municipal administration was the sports councilor Luca Bossi, present at the event at the invitation of the organizing committee.
Crotone’s participation takes on a particularly significant value in view of the passage of the Olympic torch in the city, scheduled for 21 December 2025, a moment which will involve the Crotone community in a great celebration of sport, culture and territorial identity.
The Crotone stage is part of the long journey that will carry the torch to the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games, a journey that will pass through numerous symbolic places of Italian history and heritage.
During the ceremony in Olimpia, councilor Bossi had the opportunity to meet and dialogue with the highest authorities present: Greek institutional representatives, the Minister of Sport Andrea Abodi, and the former president of CONI Giovanni Malagò, who has always been close to the valorization of local sporting realities.
The meetings were an opportunity to share the meaning of the sporting and cultural path started in Crotone, as well as to strengthen relationships that could encourage future collaborations.
“Being here, in Olimpia, in the place where everything is born, is an extraordinary emotion – declared councilor Bossi at the end of the ceremony. I wanted to represent Crotone with the respect and pride that a city with a thousand-year-old sporting tradition deserves, homeland of Milone and symbol of values that still guide us today. The torch relay in our city will be a moment that unites history, identity and future.”
During the institutional meetings, the councilor also presented the program for the construction, redevelopment and recovery of the city’s sports facilities, a strategic project that the administration is pursuing with determination. The objective is to provide Crotone with more modern, safe and accessible facilities, capable of supporting the growth of sports associations, encouraging grassroots practice and introducing more and more young people to sport.
“Investing in sport means investing in the community, in the well-being, in the growth of our children and in the city’s ability to look forward. The process of improving the facilities is already underway and will continue with new works and targeted interventions. The presence of the Olympic torch will be a further stimulus to continue on this path” added councilor Bossi.
The municipal administration, through the Sports Department, is already working on the preparation of the Crotone stage of the torch, which will involve schools, associations, citizens and sports entities.
It will be an event open to the whole community, designed to celebrate the values of Olympism – peace, friendship, respect and the sporting vocation of the area.
The city of Crotone, from the heart of ancient Magna Graecia to the journey towards Milan Cortina 2026, thus confirms its presence and role in the national sporting panorama.
