Beyond text chats, OpenAI would be working to finalize its first pocket device, a sort of smartphone without a screen, useful for conversing with AI using only the voice. According to a report from the website The Information, in the last two months the company has brought together several artificial intelligence experts with the aim of improving the audio models on which the ChatGpt chatbot is based and launching, at the beginning of 2027, a voice-focused product, designed together with Jony Ive, Apple’s historic designer. The latter left Apple in 2019 to found his independent studio, LoveFrom, acquired in May 2025 by OpenAI itself.
The details
Per The Information, ChatGpt’s new audio model, which can already hold voice conversations with users via smartphone or computer, is expected by mid-2026, and should sound more natural, handle interruptions like a real conversation partner, and even overlap within a debate, which current models are unable to do. The idea is to get people used to familiarizing themselves with the chatbot’s new audio qualities to prepare them for the device’s arrival next year.
New devices
“OpenAI is developing a family of devices that it plans to launch over time, rather than a single one”, writes The Information, “including connected speakers and glasses”. The giants of the technology sector are already well positioned on this path. Meta is working to bring Raybans equipped with displays to be controlled by voice to Italy too, while the experimentation of Alexa+, Amazon’s digital assistant based on generative AI, to be used on the group’s compatible smart speakers, will begin shortly in our country.
