A serious act of intimidation was perpetrated, in the night between Wednesday and Thursday, against the town’s deputy mayor, the engineer Eugene Charlemagne, 47 year old teacher, through the cutting, apparently with a chainsaw, by unknown persons, of twenty olive trees which took place on land he owns, located in the “Vracanda” area.
The trees were cut cleanly, leaving no doubt about the intimidating intent of the gesture. Deputy Mayor Carlomagno was notified yesterday afternoon about what happened by the owner of a neighboring land. As reported by the municipal administrator himself, “they only cut the best plants, leaving out the younger ones and not yet ready for olive production”. Immediately after learning of this vile gesture, engineer Carlomagno went to the Carabinieri barracks in Praia a Mare to file a formal complaint. The Carabinieri of the Scalea Company are investigating the matter, under the orders of Captain Andrea D’Angelo. The deputy mayor immediately received solidarity – also extended to his family – from the mayor Pasquale De Franco and by all members of the municipal administration. Yesterday, meanwhile, the Carabinieri of the Praia a Mare station, to whom the person concerned filed a formal complaint, carried out an on-site inspection, which is a plot in a wooded area of Aieta, ascertaining the number of plants subject to the cut. The fence of the land shows no signs of forced entry; so it is hypothesized that the attackers climbed over the network using a ladder.
