Protection of the territory and prevention of forest fires. With these two operational priorities, the volunteers of the “San Gregorio” nautical association have also taken to the field for weeks and especially in this incandescent month of July, among the protagonists of the 2026 forest firefighting campaign thanks to the agreement with “Calabria Verde” for the prevention and extinguishing of fires in the Reggio metropolitan area, as part of the “Zero Tolerance” operation. With 23 volunteers involved, the “San Gregorio” association confirms itself as one of the fundamental centers of the civil protection network. «Our objective is to preside over the territory with professionalism and timeliness – assures president Franco Nato -. Collaboration with Calabria Verde and the Civil Protection is essential to guarantee a rapid and coordinated response. We also ask for the support of citizens: it doesn’t take much to prevent a fire. The gratitude of the people of the territories we help is our greatest gratification.”
The forest firefighting program runs from 1 July to 15 October; the association guarantees a surveillance and intervention service 7 days a week, with shifts from 8am to 2pm and 4 hour availability for afternoon and night emergencies. The device involves men, means and technology.
The fleet of vehicles deployed is made up of 3 PKs equipped with a water reserve of 500 liters each, of which 1 PK with 3 volunteers always ready for extinguishing to support the operational teams, 1 tanker, 2 motorbikes for patrolling and controlling the woods, 1 vehicle equipped with cages for transporting dog units with dogs trained to detect gunpowder and flame triggers, 1 drone carrying out patrols with live footage from the operations center of the regional civil protection and in Calabria Verde.
The service includes fire extinguishing activities in all municipalities of the Metropolitan City. The emergency PK is permanently located in Motta S. Giovanni. To date, the “San Gregorio” nautical association has been instrumental in 6 interventions.
