Also this year, Unical has been included in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), the ranking of the best universities in the world just published by the organization “Shanghai Ranking Consultancy”. Not only that, The University of Calabria shows a clear improvement, moving from a tied 801st position to 701st. A new important recognition for Unical, which only a few weeks ago was crowned by Censis as the best large university in Italy.
The ARWU ranking identifies the best universities globally every year and analyses them based on a transparent methodology and objective data provided by third parties. In the 2024 edition, more than 2,500 institutions were examined and the best 1,000 universities in the world were included in the ranking. In our country, less than half of them, including Unical, are the universities selected in the ARWU, considered one of the most reliable university rankings internationally.
Shanghai Ranking Consultancy uses six indicators to evaluate universities, including the number of articles by the university’s researchers that are indexed on Web of Science with particular value to those published in the journals Nature and Science, winners of Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, as well as high-impact faculty who are recognized as Highly Cited Researchers from Clarivate.
Unical consolidates and strengthens its position in the ranking also thanks to the good performance of its disciplinary areas, already certified by the Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS). The University brings Computer Science & Engineering to second place among Italian universities, behind only the Polytechnic of Milan, Telecommunications Engineering to third and Chemical Engineering to fourth place at national level. Pharmacy, Physics, Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering also contribute to the good overall positioning of the University of Calabria.
“No ranking can be considered an absolute measure of the value of universities – says the rector Nicola Leone – as each of them evaluates different aspects, measured through the chosen indicators. But the presence of Unical in all the main rankings that list the best universities in the world is an important fact that confirms the good quality of the university in the various aspects of the evaluations”.

This confirms the extraordinary growth process underway at Unical which, with the cohesive commitment of professors and staff, aims to increase the impact of academic activities and increasingly raise quality, to offer the best to students for the benefit of the entire territory”.
