The language of clarity. Proposed in a jumble of words, appeals to administrative justice, provocations and positions not in line with the strategy indicated by the party.
Vittorio Pecoraro and Maria Locantorespectively secretary and provincial president of the Democratic Party, clear the field of traps and misunderstandings by relaunching the vital theme (for the urban area) of the single City.
«The Democratic Party wants to be one of the great democratic and popular engines of the creation of the “One City”. We firmly believe that this project represents a unique opportunity for the South, and we are already working on the development of a government plan that, through the commitment of our women and men, can transform Cosenza-Rende-Castrolibero into the capital of sustainable development in Southern Italy». However, no collusion with the opponents of the centre-right majority.
“Unlike the right,” they point out, “our vision is clear: the “Single City” is not just an administrative act or a legislative quibble, but a concrete project based on targeted public investments and integrated urban planning of services. However, despite our efforts, for years we have been waiting in vain for concrete answers from the Region on crucial issues such as the light rail and the new hospital, two fundamental pillars for the future of the city.”
But the project is too important to remain only in the hands of the majority that governs the country and the Region and the two Democratic politicians explain this clearly.
English: “Although we did not agree with the method imposed from above by the Region to promote the merger, we have never lost sight of the final objective that we share: the construction of the Single City. We do not intend to slow down this process for mere logics of political opposition or to head battles just to occupy a space. For this reason, together with the regional councilors of the Democratic Party, Mimmo Bevacqua and Franco Iacucci, we have worked intensely in the regional council and involved the local administrations, starting with Giuseppe Mazzuca, president of the municipal council of Cosenza, also in line with the directions that have emerged in recent months from the board of the city circle of Cosenza led by the Caligiuri Secretariat. We have not solved all the problems, but we have worked with determination to correct the distortions present in the merger project proposed by the center-right. In particular, we opposed the attempt to dissolve the municipal administration of Cosenza, considered hostile by the right, a maneuver that would have compromised the democratic life of the city. No provincial capital can be dissolved halfway through its mandate because of its political color, just because it is perhaps not liked by Palazzo Chigi. There was no power pact, but a protection of the constitutional value of local autonomies. Thanks to the strength of a broad democratic agreement within the regional assembly, we managed to avert this risk, thus protecting the foundations of local democracy”.
And the central point of the democratic agreement was the postponement of the birth of the great Cosenza.
English: «The postponement to 2027 for the implementation of the Single City was a crucial step. This postponement» say Pecoraro and Locanto «offers us a precious opportunity not only to guarantee the natural continuation of the Caruso administration of Cosenza until the end of its mandate, but also to complete the challenges of the Pnrr with greater freedom by 2026 and then start a new governance of the territory in line with the new European programming of cohesion funds that will start in 2028. Furthermore, this extra time will allow us to more actively involve local communities, refining the proposal so that it truly responds to the needs of citizens. For the exclusive good of citizens, we have helped improve the impact of a law that we did not write and that we did not support, and now it is up to citizens to express themselves through a referendum. The Democratic Party is united and ready to face the challenge of the Single City, bringing this discussion among the people, outside the buildings». What can we say? The season of useless polemics is over and… full steam ahead.
