From 68th to 85th place. It is a bad step backwards, the one taken by Messina in the annual Urban Ecosystem report, the ranking created by Legambiente, in collaboration with Il Sole 24 Ore and Ambiente Italia, which offers a detailed vision of the evolution (defined as “too slow”) of the environmental performance of Italian cities.
The study is carried out on the 106 capitals taking into account 19 indicators distributed in 6 thematic areas (air, water, waste, mobility, urban environment, energy).
A year ago Messina had made an important leap forward, gaining 28 positions compared to 96th place in 2023. This year, however, it has lost 17 positions, “saving itself” thanks above all to public transport. The parameters in which the worst performances are recorded are: water consumption (90th), dispersion of the water network (80th), cycle paths (94th), trees (94th) and total greenery (105th). Among the positive points, the number of passengers in public transport (26th place), the offer of public transport (25th), the pedestrian areas (45th), the efficient use of land (26th) and public solar (40th).
The ranking is drawn up on the basis of 2024 municipal data collected by Legambiente with the exception of urban greenery (Istat, 2023), cars (Aci, 2024), efficient use of land (elaboration on 2024 Ispra data) and data on air quality (Mal’Aria report on regional Arpa data, 2024).
