Iran is reportedly ready to formally pledge not to produce or acquire nuclear weapons as part of a draft deal negotiated with the United States. This is what a senior Iranian official reported to the Reuters agency, which released the preliminary contents of the agreement.
According to what emerged, the document would represent a first step towards a possible normalization of relations between Washington and Tehran on the delicate nuclear dossier.
The enriched uranium knot
The draft requires Iran to undertake not to develop or acquire nuclear weapons. However, the question relating to the stocks of enriched uranium already present in the country would remain open.
The details of the management of this material should be addressed at a later stage, within a period of sixty days of any preliminary agreement being reached between the parties.
The release of 25 billion dollars is expected
Among the points contained in the text there would also be a commitment by the United States to release frozen Iranian assets for a total value of around 25 billion dollars.
The measure would represent one of the most significant economic aspects of the agreement and could contribute to promoting rapprochement between the two countries after years of tensions and sanctions linked to the Iranian nuclear program.
