The request of the mayor of Vibo Valentia did not go unheeded. The prefect of Vibo Valentia, Anna Aurora Colosimo, yesterday convened a technical table to address, all together, the wild boar emergency that is affecting the territory of Vibo Valentia. Also around the table are the Calabria Region, the Mongiana forestry carabinieri command, and the territorial hunting areas. “I sincerely thank prefect Colosimo for his attention, sensitivity and promptness in wanting to convene this technical meeting – declares the mayor of the capital, Enzo Romeo – since it is absolutely urgent to address this emergency, to protect public safety”.

For the Municipality of Vibo Valentia, in addition to the mayor, the Councilor for the Environment, Marco Miceli, and the commander of the local police, Michele Bruzzese, were also present; for the Calabria Region present Giuseppe Malvaso, from the Agriculture, agri-food resources and forestry department; and for the Army the commander of the Biodiversity department Rocco Pelle. Also present was the Territorial Hunting Area with Riccardo Colistra. “The Calabria Region – explains the mayor – has informed us that it has made a total of 22 video-monitored cages available to the ATCs of Calabria, two for each provincial ATC, therefore four will go to Vibo Valentia. These are traps that allow the capture of up to 10 wild boars each, they will be managed directly by the ATCs and will be positioned in the points where the greatest presence of wild boars has been recorded. As regards our city, I already have a map with sensitive places and I believe that this could be an important first step towards mitigating the phenomenon”. On the part of the mayor, then, a reminder of some rules of behavior which citizens must follow to prevent wild boars from becoming familiar with the urban context in which they end up finding themselves: “All the experts have noted how some incorrect behaviours, such as the incorrect display of waste or even feeding the animals, end up having an extremely harmful effect, with more and more wild boars returning to those places, which is understandable. For this reason, we have undertaken to disseminate as soon as possible, as we have already done in recent months, a handbook with some simple rules to follow to stem the phenomenon of wild boars in the city. I therefore appeal to the sense of responsibility of my fellow citizens, confident that this, combined with an institutional synergy that we have started thanks to the fundamental contribution of the prefect, will prove very useful in reversing the emergency”.
