Wizz Air, Italy’s second largest airline by market share and the preferred choice of 21 million Italians last year, today announces the launch of a new domestic route connecting Lamezia Terme and Rome Fiumicino, further strengthening the company’s long-term commitment to Calabria and Southern Italy.
The announcement comes on the occasion of the meeting between the CEO of Wizz Air, József Váradi, and Roberto Occhiuto, President of the Calabria Region, welcomed at the airline’s headquarters in Budapest to explore new ways of strengthening connectivity, tourism development and future growth opportunities for the region and for the company.
Details of the new route and fares
The new route between Lamezia Terme and the Italian capital will be operational from 25 October 2026 and is already available for booking, with fares starting from €19.99 on www.wizzair.com and on the WIZZ mobile app.
Wizz Air has maintained a solid presence in Lamezia Terme since the start of its operations at the airport on 2 March 2005, with the first connection to Budapest. Over the years, the company has continued to invest in Calabria, supported by the strong and strategic partnership with the Calabria Region and the Lamezia Terme International Airport.
The launch of the new Lamezia Terme – Rome Fiumicino route represents an important milestone for Wizz Air’s operations in Calabria, as it is the company’s first domestic route from Lamezia Terme. Operated twice a day, seven days a week, the new connection will play a key role in ensuring reliable and accessible national mobility for the city, the surrounding area and the entire Calabria region, connecting Lamezia Terme with the Italian capital, with Wizz Air’s largest base in the country and with the company’s largest Italian network.
The comment from the CEO of Wizz Air
Commenting on the announcement, József Váradi, Chief Executive Officer of Wizz Air, said: “Calabria is becoming an increasingly important part of Wizz Air’s future, and today Italy is much more than a strategic market for our company: it is the largest market in our network and is increasingly becoming our second home. The launch of the new Lamezia Terme – Rome Fiumicino route represents a natural and strategic next step in the development of our operations in Calabria. As the first domestic route from Lamezia Terme, this new connection will strengthen national mobility for the city and the territory surrounding area, while offering passengers a reliable and convenient connection to the capital, to our largest base in Italy and to the largest national network.
From Lamezia Terme, Wizz Air already connects Calabria with Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia and, with the addition of Rome Fiumicino, we further expand our offer. Together with our partners, represented by the Region and the airport, we are building a solid platform for sustainable growth, accessible travel and future opportunities. This is just the beginning of our ongoing commitment to Calabria, with more news to come. We also want passengers to feel confident in booking their travel. Thanks to our disciplined operational strategy, which includes a robust fuel hedging policy, Wizz Air is well positioned to continue to offer affordable fares alongside increased operational reliability and improved customer experience across the network. We remain fully committed to offering reliable, punctual and accessible travel options to passengers who choose Calabria and beyond during the summer, as we have done in the first four months of the year. Let’s WIZZ, Lamezia Terme! Jamunindi, Calabria!”.
The satisfaction of the Calabria Region
Roberto Occhiuto, President of the Calabria Region, added: “I would like to extend sincere thanks to the CEO of Wizz Air, József Váradi, and to all the management of the company, who I met today in Budapest, for the availability and attention shown towards Calabria. Our Region is happy to strengthen the collaborative relationship with Wizz Air and to be able to announce today a new and strategic connection between Lamezia Terme airport, the main Calabrian airport, and Rome, the capital of Italy.
Two new daily flights, active seven days a week, represent a great opportunity for citizens, workers, students and tourists. These are connections which, thanks to competitive rates, will contribute to making air transport to and from Calabria more accessible, and perhaps also to calm the prices of other companies. This new route confirms the growing attractiveness of Calabria and the value of the work we are carrying out for the tourism sector and to improve the connections of our Region with the rest of Italy and Europe”.
The Wizz Air network in Lamezia Terme
The new connection with Rome Fiumicino adds a strong domestic dimension to Wizz Air’s network from Lamezia Terme, integrating the company’s current international offering and strengthening the airport’s role as a strategic gateway to Calabria.
Through continuous investments in the region, Wizz Air confirms its ambition to support regional development, incoming tourism, national and international connectivity and accessible travel opportunities for both Italian and international passengers.
In more detail, the current network from Lamezia Terme includes Sofia in Bulgaria and Bratislava in Slovakia with 2 weekly frequencies, Budapest in Hungary, Katowice and Warsaw in Poland, each with 3 weekly frequencies.
The company also continued to strengthen operational preparedness for the summer peak through enhanced planning, improved crew and aircraft allocation processes, closer coordination between operational teams and continued investments in technology and customer support.
The numbers of success in Italy and future prospects
Wizz Air’s investment in Calabria is part of a broader path of constant and significant growth in Italy. In 2025, the company transported over 21 million passengers in the country, recording an increase of 8% compared to the previous year and maintaining an excellent operational reliability rate of 99.6%. Today, with a 12% market share, 44 aircraft based in Italy, 310 routes to 33 countries, 26 airports served and 7 operating bases — Catania, Milan Malpensa, Naples, Palermo, Rome Fiumicino, Turin and Venice — Wizz Air is the country’s second largest airline and aims to offer over 32 million seats in 2026.
This growth also reflects Wizz Air’s growing commitment to Southern Italy and regions such as Calabria, where the company continues to invest in new travel opportunities, greater connectivity and more affordable fares for local communities, tourists and businesses. The company also has over 1,360 colleagues in Italy and continues to invest locally through the Rome Training Centre, the Group’s second training centre, developed with an investment of 40 million euros and equipped with 3 flight simulators available 24/7.
