The “Inclusion – deafness – technology” workshop was held in the “F. Todaro” complex of the Mater Domini Catanzaro – Manzoni Nord Est comprehensive institute, organized by the provincial section of the Ens (National Deaf Body) of Catanzaro, led by president Serafino Mazza, as part of the project envisaged by regional law 52/2023.

The initiative, welcomed by the school director Giulio Comerci, involved the students of the third classes of the lower secondary school of the complex.

A path to overcome stereotypes and prejudices

The event made use of the presence of the Lis interpreter Giuseppina Palmieri, who allowed interaction between the deaf people present and the students, encouraging active participation in the proposed activities.

The psychologist Gina Luisa Pace, of the Order of Psychologists of Basilicata and expert in the use and dependencies of technological devices, guided the children on a journey of discovery of the world of deafness with the aim of dismantling clichés and prejudices.

Through experiential activities and practical simulations, students were able to directly experience the difficulties linked to communication barriers, for example dealing with the limitations of lip reading and identifying useful tools and strategies to make dialogue more effective.

Technology as a tool of inclusion

During the meeting it was highlighted how diversity represents a resource and not an obstacle in human relations. In this context, technology can play a fundamental role in promoting the accessibility of communication and becoming a concrete tool for inclusion.

A conscious use of digital devices and knowledge of good practices to make every message accessible to all allow us to overcome many communication difficulties and promote real mutual understanding.

The interventions of Mazza and Comerci

In his initial greeting, the president of Ens Catanzaro Serafino Mazza thanked the school and the head teacher for having allowed the association to present to students an alternative communication method, useful not only for deaf people but also in everyone’s daily life, enhancing forms of communication that go beyond the exclusively verbal one.

The head teacher Giulio Comerci hoped for a stable collaboration between the Ens and the institute, with the aim of building a network capable of promoting initiatives of this type and enriching the educational offer intended for students and their families.

The meeting ended with a positive outcome, confirming the value of experiences capable of promoting mutual knowledge and spreading a culture of inclusion in which differences represent a resource for the entire community.
