The 2nd Joint Meeting Brazil–Italy in Mathematics concluded at the Rectorate of the University of Messina, an event which for five days projected the City of the Strait at the center of international mathematical research. The Meeting was sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation – MAECI, its organization was managed by the Departments of Engineering and Mathematical and Computer Sciences, Physical Sciences and Earth Sciences of UniMe, with the coordination of the local organizing committee entrusted to Prof. Giuseppina D’Aguì.
Furthermore, four scientific mathematical societies participated in its creation (Sociedade Brasileira de Matemática – SBM, Unione Matematica Italiana – UMI, Sociedade Brasileira de Matemática Aplicada e Computacional – SBMAC and Società Italiana di Matematica Applicata e Industriale – SIMAI).
During the inaugural ceremony, Prof. Giovanna Spatari, Rector of the University of Messina, and, among others, Prof. Marco Andreatta, President of the Italian Mathematical Union, and Professor Jaqueline Mesquita, President of the Sociedade Brasileira de Matemática, who unanimously underlined the value of scientific cooperation between Italy and Brazil, the role of mathematics and its universal language capable of promoting research, innovation and dialogue between nations.
“I would like to thank the University of Messina and, in particular, its group of mathematicians – added the President of UMI, Prof. Andreatta – for having done a marvelous job and having organized a truly very valuable meeting. In recent days, the focus has been on research in the mathematical field, on the relationships between sector studies involving Italy, Brazil and 18 other participating countries. The current moment is truly important, the discipline is obtaining excellent results with a high impact on society, on applications, on industry. Today mathematics has a predominant role in the development of world economies and faces great challenges, such as Artificial Intelligence, of which in some way it is also a generator. This and much more was discussed during the sessions of this initiative which, in addition to demonstrating the vitality of our disciplinary sector, has also consolidated the already existing bond between the Italian and Brazilian mathematical communities”.
Specifically, the initiative brought together 424 researchers from Italian, Brazilian and international universities and research centers for a total of 20 countries and 4 continents represented. There were 10 plenary conferences, 39 thematic sessions and 2 round tables on the great challenges of medicine and climate change. The size of the event laid the foundations for new collaborations, research and projects shared between Italy, Brazil and various areas of the world.
