A fairly dated situation and already reported by the municipal administration which had already reported and given a mandate for the redevelopment of the area. Now, however, after a further inspection by the firefighters, following the recent adverse weather events, it has become necessary to order a ban on all the homes located in via Europa from house numbers 32 to 86 due to a potential collapse.

“This is a situation dating back to several decades, which concerns a lesion already present in the area, aggravated by the latest flood events that affected Sicily. There is not a landslide in progress, we took action as a precaution. We have made the families safe (there are five and 10 people in total). We are monitoring the situation”, declares mayor Gianni Pino.

«This is – Mayor Pino continues in a note – a phenomenon which, although quite old, was addressed in time by the municipal administration, which following a report from residents about a year and a half ago, carried out the necessary inspections and entrusted a technical assignment in order to ascertain the causes and identify possible solutions. The technicians’ work was completed at the end of 2025, and today there already exists a substantially executive project, which addresses the problem and indicates the interventions to be implemented. To all this – observes the mayor of San Filippo del Mela – we must add that last summer a further inspection was carried out with the help of another geologist, which was followed by a meeting with the Civil Protection, to agree on the monitoring activities of the area, aimed at clarifying the causes and possible effects. The important meteorological event and the events that occurred in other Sicilian locations have hastened the need for checks and interventions, and increased the residents’ concern. Everything else – underlines Pino – is already known: following a visual inspection by the Fire Brigade, some houses in the area were banned. Clearly the first urgent need was to find accommodation for the five resident families. At the same time, the problem is being addressed from a technical point of view, to understand what the immediate solutions could be for making the area safe. What happened – concludes the note from the mayor of San Filippo del Mela – was the subject of a report to the provincial civil protection, but we are trying to start a discussion with the leaders of the regional civil protection and with the regional government”.
