A perhaps unique territorial political role within the port area since the other two municipalities (San Ferdinando and Rosarno) seem to be distant, at least at the moment, from the dynamics of the port. We asked the mayor of Gioia Tauro, Simona Scarcella, what her administration’s expectations are on the work of the presidency of the Port System Authority. Little has yet passed since Piacenza exercised his full functions – he became president only a few weeks ago after a period of administration – and for this reason today we can ask what the territory expects from a new figure in the port area who comes from an equally complex reality like the Ligurian one.
Have you had the opportunity to speak with the new top management of the port system authority?
“Certainly. I was the first, together with the governor of Calabria Roberto Occhiuto, to welcome the new president, then commissioner, lawyer. Paolo Piacenza. Below we have had the opportunity to discuss various issues affecting the port of Gioia Tauro and the industrial area several times. The lawyer Piacenza represents a real breath of fresh air and a breath of fresh air after the last few years of management, characterized only and exclusively by narcissism and vainglory, to the detriment of the development of the territory. The port must not and cannot only be the leader in the handling of Teus and when it is, the merits must be recognized mainly to the terminal operator and only then to others. It was the terminal operator who saved the port by taking over from Contship which was in a difficult situation after it started the adventure of the largest port in the Mediterranean, the rest was just pure propaganda for its own sake which ended on 30 July 2025 with the Government’s decision to appoint a very competent technician in terms of port management. With Piacenza another story begins again and the Municipality is at his side to support him.”
