Russian Andrey Rublev has qualified for the semifinals of the Masters 1000 in Madrid, beating the defending double champion, Carlos Alcaraz, in the quarterfinals. The Spaniard won the first set with a score of 6-4, but then suffered the return of the world no.8, who prevailed in the next two games 6-3, 6-2.
Rublev will now face the winner of the other quarter, who this evening will face the American Taylor Fritz and the Argentine Francisco Cerundolo. A disappointment for Alcaraz, who may have been affected by the almost three-hour match played yesterday with Struff. The Murcian risks having to give up his place as world no.3 to Daniil Medvedev if the Russian were to beat Jiri Lehecka tomorrow and reach the semi-finals.
