«Remembrance Day represents a fundamental moment of collective reflection. Remembering is a civil duty: it means preserving the historical truth and transmitting the values of freedom, human dignity and respect to the new generations. Remembering also means being vigilant every day so that discrimination, racism and violence never find space in our society again.” Thus the mayor of Messina, Federico Basile.

As ordered by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, the national and European flags are displayed at half-mast in Palazzo Zanca and on the public buildings of the Municipality of Messina, as a sign of respectful homage to the victims of the extermination of the Jewish people and to the Italian military and political deportees in the Nazi concentration camps.
