A scent of tradition and solidarity invaded the walls of Gazzi prison yesterday, where chef Paolo Romeo’s cuisine transformed Christmas into an opportunity for redemption and human warmth for two hundred inmates. The unprecedented initiative saw the participation of a team of high-profile chefs and combined cuisine and social commitment in an event with a strong symbolic value.
Promoted byProvincial Association of Chefs and Pastry Chefs of Messinaof which Paolo Romeo is president, the day was welcomed with enthusiasm by the prison director, Angela Sciaviccoand by a broad institutional representation. Among those present were Lucia Risicato, guarantor of prisoners’ rights, Francesca Arrigo, president of the Surveillance Court, magistrates, prison operators and representatives of the penitentiary police.
A message of hope through cooking
Chef Paolo Romeo, already active as a teacher trainer within the prison, conceived and led the event, supported by names from the culinary scene such as Carlotta Andreacchio, Filippo Lembo, Isabella Catalano, Giuseppe Arena, Tino Sturiale, Sinniah Kajenthan, Simone de Tommaso and Cristina Beccalli. Together, they prepared a lunch that went far beyond the gastronomic aspect.
“This lunch represents much more than a simple meal,” Romeo said. “It is a message of solidarity, hope and trust in change. Cooking can be a powerful tool to encourage prisoners to embark on a path of social redemption, discovering new opportunities.”
Dignity and inclusion at the center of the initiative
The Christmas lunch not only brought a moment of comfort, but also highlighted the power of cooking as a means of building bridges between the outside world and prison reality. The dishes served were a tribute to Sicilian tradition, but also a symbol of inclusion and hope. The director of the prison, Angela Sciavicco, underlined the importance of projects like this in promoting the social reintegration of prisoners and respect for their dignity.
“Events like this demonstrate how solidarity and civil commitment can become concrete tools of transformation,” commented Sciavicco, defining the initiative as a success from every point of view.
A bridge between prison and society
The event was also an opportunity to shine a spotlight on the role of institutions and civil society in promoting the reintegration of detained people. Lucia Risicato, guarantor of prisoners’ rights, reiterated how moments of sharing and humanity are fundamental to breaking down barriers and creating a constructive dialogue.
With this initiative, the Provincial Association of Chefs and Pastry Chefs of Messina has made a tangible contribution to those who live in a condition of fragility, bringing a message of hope and future within the prison walls.
A tradition to cultivate
The Christmas lunch at Gazzi prison was more than an event: it was a gesture that warmed hearts and opened new perspectives. Chef Paolo Romeo and his colleagues have demonstrated that, even in the most difficult situations, cooking can transform itself into a vehicle for redemption and solidarity. An example that, hopefully, can inspire other similar initiatives across the country.
