A new wet year, or rather very wet, that greeted 2026 in Mili Marina. About ten intrepid swimmers braved the cold temperatures and the “invigorating” waters of the Ionian Sea, giving life to the traditional New Year’s Bath. An event that represents an indispensable ritual for the Messina area.
Organized by the January 1st Committee, the event attracted residents and onlookers to the beach of Mili Marina, transforming the first day of the year into a celebration of joy and good humor. Although the thermometer was not particularly generous, the enthusiasm of the participants warmed the atmosphere, culminating in the highlight of the collective dive. A liberating cry, an explosion of splashes and smiles accompanied the bathers’ entry into the water, many of them veterans of this singular tradition, accompanied by some “neophytes”.

”Every year is a different emotion – declared Giuseppe Girolamo, one of the historic members of the 1 January Committee – we see more and more people joining us, and this fills us with pride. It is a special way to start the year, with a gesture of courage and light-heartedness which is now part of Mili Marina’s identity”. The event is not just a dip in the cold waters, but also a moment of conviviality, with exchanges of good wishes and toasts for a hopefully peaceful and prosperous future.
The New Year’s Bath has become a fixed and heartfelt event. A unique way to celebrate the first day of the year, combining tradition, fun and a pinch of audacity. A special initiative with a strong community spirit.
