A record-breaking 2025 for the port of Gioia Tauro, which closed the year with a movement of around 4.5 million teus, «going beyond – according to the System Authority – all the rosiest expectations. A growth that has seen the percentage curve of container traffic mark an increase of 14 percent, crystallizing, again this year, the undisputed national leadership of the Calabrian port, which is also positioned among the prime numbers of the international ports in the Mediterranean”.

Resilience and competitiveness in the face of global challenges

«In 2025, the port of Gioia Tauro – we read in a note – has thus demonstrated that it is brilliantly able to cope with the various challenges posed by both the market and the global political scenario. In fact, despite the difficulties generated by the consequences of the European ETS directive and the Red Sea crisis, both of which could have led to a change of direction in the trajectory of global traffic, the port of Gioia Tauro has held up. And it has evidently held up well, thus breaking down the four million barrier for the first time in its history.

Connected to 120 ports in the world, of which 60 in the Mediterranean, it has, in fact, confirmed itself as a strategic port for its reference shipowners (MSC and Grimaldi), who have continued to choose and prefer the port of Gioia Tauro. Important numbers – it is underlined – obtained thanks to a winning synergy implemented between public and private, which saw the organisation, led by President Paolo Piacenza, vigorously adopt its development policy to support its infrastructure.

Infrastructure investments and sustainability

Among the interventions aimed at ensuring an ever-increasing international competitive capacity, the implementation of the electrification works on the docks stands out, for a total of 70 million euros, and the investment aimed at dredging the seabed, which is completing the relevant approval process and which will allow the depth of the seabed to be maintained at 18 metres, a prerogative of the port, amounting to 5 million euros.

The strategic vision of President Paolo Piacenza

In this regard, the President of the Authority, Paolo Piacenza, states: «2025 confirms the centrality of the Port of Gioia Tauro in international maritime traffic. The intense infrastructural planning activity has a dual objective. First of all, confirm and encourage the natural vocation of the port in the transshipment sector. At the same time, ensure greater cutting-edge infrastructure, to stimulate the creation of specialized jobs, with the clear objective of making Gioia Tauro an intermodal hub of reference for the entire South. This is an intense job managed in full synergy with our Terminal Operators.”

Looking at the numbers, in particular, the Medcenter Container Terminal handled 4,490,566 teus, with an overall growth of half a million teus more than in 2024.

Gioia Tauro: strategic gateway to Italy

«An extraordinary result – it is further noted – which also highlights the port’s ability to impact the success of the national import/export economic policy, being the only port of entry for the mega container ships that ply the transoceanic routes to reach Italy. An extraordinary impact which sees the Gioia Tauro port manage 40 percent of the movement of international goods in the national market, thanks to the depth of its seabed (unique in Italy at 18 metres), its high level of infrastructure and, last but not least, the centrality of its position between the Suez Canal and the Strait of Gibraltar”.
