Polls open today and tomorrow in Campania, Puglia and Veneto. In Campania the challenge is between Roberto Fico, candidate of the progressive camp and former president of the Chamber, and Edmondo Cirielli, deputy foreign minister and leader of FdI. Also in the running are Stefano Bandecchi with “Dimensione Bandecchi”, Giuliano Granato for Potere al Popolo, Carlo Arnese for “Forza del Popolo” and Nicola Campanile for the civic list “For – for the people and the community”. In Puglia the centre-left is counting on Antonio Decaro, former mayor of Bari and president of Anci, thanks to the almost 500 thousand preferences received at the last European elections. The center-right sides Luigi Lobuono, an entrepreneur close to Forza Italia and former president of Fiera del Levante. Also competing are Ada Donno (“Puglia Pacifista e Popolare”) and Sabino Mangano (“Civic Alliance for Puglia”). In Veneto the centre-right is nominating Alberto Stefani, federal deputy secretary of the League and already the youngest deputy of the Northern League. The challenge is Giovanni Manildo, former PD mayor of Treviso and supported by a broader centre-left coalition than in the past. Luca Zaia will be the leader of the League in all provinces. The internal game within the centre-right will be decisive: the Carroccio aims to exploit Zaia’s driving force, while FdI aims to confirm itself as the first regional party. Marco Rizzo (Popular Sovereign Democracy), Fabio Bui (“Popular for Veneto”) and Riccardo Szumski (“Resistere Veneto”) complete the picture. The real opponent, according to all the candidates, remains abstentionism: estimates indicate a turnout below 50% in all three regions.
