It was a meteor that generated the brilliant light trail that was immortalized in the Philippines on the evening of May 25th right above the slopes of the erupting Mayon volcano. This was confirmed by the Philippine Space Agency, which published the image taken by a camera from the country’s Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
The same light show between heaven and earth was also captured by surveillance cameras and dashcams of several cars nearby.
Videos show the meteor streaking across the sky before igniting in a sudden burst of green light above the lava-fired slopes of the volcano. Some witnesses also shared the images on social media.
According to the calculations of a local amateur astronomer, the meteor would have released an energy equivalent to 6.8 million kilograms of explosive: if it had not completely disintegrated as it passed through the atmosphere, the impact of any surviving fragments (meteorites) could have caused enormous landslides on the slopes of the volcano.
