The Catanzaro DDA has appealed the acquittals pronounced in the first instance for the former president of the Province of Vibo, Salvatore Solano (former mayor of Stefanaconi), in the trial born from the Petrol Mafie operation. Solano was sentenced on December 1st by the Vibo court to one year for electoral corruption (as former president of the Province), in conjunction with his cousin Giuseppe D’Amico, the latter sentenced to 30 years for mafia association, drug trafficking and illicit trafficking of hydrocarbons. For Solano, the mafia aggravation and the charge of disturbed freedom of auctions were dropped in the first instance, hence the appeal of the DDA against these acquittals (as well as those for the employees of the Province, Capria, Francolino and Del Vecchio). In the sentence, the judges underlined that «the wiretaps show the emotional affinity between Solano and the organized crime circles, in addition to certifying their full awareness of the criminal caliber of D’Amico and the ways in which he would have procured votes. Solano’s responsibility is also evident from a 2018 wiretap which shows that he received from the mayor of Capistrano Marco Martino a photograph depicting the ballot paper with the preference given to Solano”. In the meantime, on 26 July last, the Council of Ministers dissolved the municipal administration of Stefanaconi led by mayor Salvatore Solano due to mafia infiltration.
