The continuing heat and lack of rain are putting Calabria’s water reserves to the test, with increasingly evident effects also in the Cosentino area. After the critical issues recorded in the provinces of Reggio and Crotone, the water shortage now also affects the Abatemarco and Capodacqua aqueducts, among the largest in the region.

According to data released by Sorical, the Abatemarco, which supplies 26 municipalities from San Donato Ninea to the urban area of Cosenza, Rende, Montalto and Castrolibero, has suffered a reduction in flow of around 30%, while the Capodacqua, which serves Settimo di Montalto, Quattromiglia, Cep and part of Arcavacata, records a drop of 26%.

An anomalous lowering, which began as early as July and is destined to continue until the autumn rains. High temperatures, long periods of drought and the lack of snow at high altitude, explain the CNR experts, have reduced the natural recharge of the aquifers.

Problems are also recorded along the Savuto aqueduct network, between Rogliano, Aiello Calabro and Lago. Sorical has announced structural interventions on the main systems to improve the stability of the service and reduce interruptions.
