A Ukrainian drone reportedly hit the turbine building of unit 6 of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. This is supported by the CEO of Rosatom, Alexey Likhachev, according to whom the attack occurred in the afternoon, causing a subsequent explosion.
“This afternoon a Ukrainian combat drone hit the turbine building of the electric unit number 6, causing a subsequent detonation,” Likhachev said, denouncing what he called the first targeted attack on the main equipment of a nuclear power plant.
Damage to the turbine building
According to the reconstruction provided by Rosatom, the explosion would have perforated the structure causing damage to the building that houses the turbines of the affected unit. At the moment no critical damage to the main systems of the power plant has been reported.
The Russian authorities have defined the episode as particularly serious in light of the strategic and sensitive nature of the nuclear site, which has long been at the center of tensions linked to the conflict in Ukraine.
No anomalies in radiation levels
The power plant, however, reassured us about the functioning of the systems, specifying that all systems continue to operate regularly and that radiation levels are normal.
According to the information released, no victims or injuries were reported and no damage was detected that would compromise the safety of the plant. However, international attention remains high on the situation of the Zaporizhzhia power plant, the largest in Europe.
