Two archaeological finds of great historical interest have been discovered during a major operation concluded in the Cannatello seabed near San Leone, in the province of AgrigentoThe Superintendency of the Sea of the Sicilian Region, with the support of the Carabinieri, has in fact recovered some lead parts, in particular a mobile block and the counter-hammer of an anchor belonging to a small vessel, probably from the Roman era.
«The sea with its depths continues to give us great emotions, as well as precious finds for the knowledge of history – says the councilor for cultural heritage and Sicilian identity Francis Paul Scarpinato –. Thanks to all those who made this operation possible. Collaboration between organizations, institutions and private citizens is of fundamental importance to protect and enhance our submerged cultural heritage».
The operation to protect the finds was started following a report from the BCsicilia association. The Superintendence of the Sea coordinated the intervention with the valuable collaboration of the military of the Palermo Cultural Heritage Protection Unit and the Carabinieri Divers Unit of Messina.
The recovered finds were entrusted to the Archaeological Park of the Valley of the Templeswhich will take care of the first conservative treatment. Subsequently, they will be enhanced in a structure in the Agrigento area, contributing to enriching the cultural and historical heritage of Sicily.
