During the last national assembly of Italia Viva last September 28th, Nunzia Paese, president of Italia Viva Calabriadrew attention to the serious state of justice in the region and asked the assembly for a strong commitment to protecting the right to justice and the guarantees of every Calabrian citizen. Paese then submitted to the assembly a document with which the Justice Coordination of Italia Viva Calabria (made up not only of the regional president but also of Pasquale Simari, Fabrizio Loizzo and Francesco Santelli), adheres to and shares the contents of the resolutions of the Calabrian criminal chambers which call for the abstention of lawyers from hearings and from any judicial activity in the criminal sector. The lawyers of the Criminal Chamber of Cosenza will abstain from 16 to 20 September, in Vibo Valentia from 23 to 27 September 2024, in Catanzaro from 30 September to 4 October while the other Chambers of the Calabrian Districts will continue individually until 23 November to then arrive at three-day regional abstention scheduled for 10, 11 and 12 December.

With great speed the Italia Viva party, always sensitive to the problems of justice as well as to the requests coming from Southern Italy, took charge of the request and through the deputy Ivan Scalfarotto, member of the Senate Justice Commission, drafted a written question to the Minister of Justice, Carlo Nordio, which was presented today 2 October.

The document recalls the deliberations of the Coordination of the Calabrian Criminal Chambers which proclaimed the state of agitation and examines the main critical issues highlighted in the text which concern not only the lack of staff in the ranks of the judiciary but a more general state of suffering of the entire a sector which would also derive from unresolved issues in the complex management of the Calabrian penal administration.

With these premises, Italia Viva asks the Minister of Justice to take adequate and consistent initiatives with the serious critical issues highlighted in relation above all to the staff of the judiciary and the strengthening of peripheral structures of that ministry so as to be able to effectively respond to the demand for justice of the Calabrian citizens.
