The resilience of families is on the edge of crisis. With each passing day the number of people in the meat grinder of accounts that never add up grows. And the use of banks is becoming a collective phenomenon. In the first half of 2025, according to Mister Credit-Crif, 56.1% of Calabrians have at least one active credit relationship. Mortgages, personal or finalized loans. Often not to buy, but to survive and not sink into poverty. It is not just houses that are financed, but treatments, appliances, clothes, children’s studies or simply a used car that you take to work. Sometimes even the necessary, spread over a growing number of “convenient” installments. The average debt in the region stands at 19,292 euros. A modest figure if compared with the 49,226 euros of Trentino or the 40,294 of Lombardy, but it is in the extent of the waiver, not in the absolute volume, that the weight of the debt is measured. Because in Calabria every euro taken from the present is a real sacrifice. And here, in a region where the average gross income, according to Istat, is 17,479 euros per year (in Trentino it is 28,842 euros), even a monthly installment of 237 euros (this is the average calculated by Mister Credit) becomes a distinction between stability and imbalance.
