Another suspicious death over which the specter of medical malpractice casts disturbing shadows. The broken life is that of a young 32-year-old father from Corigliano Rossano, Marco Crispino, who died within a week at the “Pugliese Ciaccio” hospital in Catanzaro, leaving a wife and a few-year-old child. A death that is currently inexplicable also because, according to the report made by his family, his passing is mourned without having received a diagnosis during his hospitalization.
It all starts on Sunday 18 January when the 32-year-old goes to the emergency room of the “Guido Compagna” hospital in Corigliano. He arrives there on his legs, together with his wife, worried about abnormal bleeding from the nose and gums.

The story

After having examined him, the doctors at the Corigliano hospital arranged for him to be transferred to Catanzaro in order to subject him to further in-depth tests which could also be carried out urgently. The suspicion of a fulminant leukemia hovers, but the suspicion remains such because in the meantime no tests are conducted to confirm or dispel the diagnostic hypothesis.
The fact is that the man arrives in Catanzaro, is hospitalized, but for the whole week he and his family are not made aware of any diagnosis on the cause of that bleeding. Last Sunday, the tragic epilogue. The young man dies amidst the despair of his family.
The wife decided to demand answers about a death whose causes are still unknown and presented a complaint to the Catanzaro Carabinieri station which was then sent to the Prosecutor’s Office. The Catanzaro prosecutor, Maria Caracciolo, owner of the investigation file that was opened on the suspicious death of Marco Crispino, then proceeded to seize the body and ordered the autopsy to be carried out.

The autopsy

Yesterday, in the offices of the Catanzaro Prosecutor’s Office, the task was entrusted to the expert who will carry out the autopsy on the body of the young father. An exam that was carried out on the same afternoon yesterday by Dr. Alessandro Tarallo and the body has already been returned to the family for the funeral. The results of the autopsy will hopefully help shed light on what happened and verify whether or not there were negligent or omissive actions in the man’s clinical course that caused his death.
Meanwhile, the “Codici” Association of Rome intervened in the matter over which the specter of medical malpractice looms, asking for clarity on the death and has in turn presented a complaint to the Prosecutor’s Office. «We ask the Prosecutor’s Office to shed light on this dramatic affair – states Ivano Giacomelli, national secretary of Codici –, starting from the point that appears central, namely the in-depth investigations arranged. There are weighty and disturbing questions. We trust in the work of the judiciary to provide clarity, identifying any shortcomings on the part of the health workers involved.”
Meanwhile, there remains the pain of a young wife and a child who will not be able to know his father except through the stories and memories of those who knew him and loved him. There also remains the dismay of an entire community, in which the thirty-two year old was known and appreciated, for a broken young life.
